RSHE
Subject Lead: Mrs Lawson

At Our Lady of Compassion, our approach to RSHE is fully aligned with the school’s Catholic ethos, Gospel values, and the RED curriculum, while also ensuring pupils are prepared for life in modern Britain. Our RSHE curriculum supports children in understanding their personal and social development, helping them to navigate the moral, social and cultural aspects of growing up. Through the use of No Outsiders and A Journey in Love, we promote inclusion, respect, and a clear understanding of relationships within a Catholic context. We aim to nurture confident individuals who can make thoughtful decisions and show respect for the views and feelings of others. RSHE is an integral part of daily school life and fully meets all statutory requirements.

No Outsiders

The integration of Andrew Moffatt’s No Outsiders programme within RSHE ensures that Our Lady’s continues to provide a balanced, inclusive, and values-led curriculum, which supports pupils in becoming respectful, reflective, and responsible members of society, firmly grounded in our Catholic ethos.
The No Outsiders programme is used alongside A Journey in Love and RE to support pupils in:
-
Developing respect for others, regardless of difference
-
Understanding that everyone is created with dignity and worth
-
Exploring themes of friendship, kindness, empathy, and inclusion
-
Engaging in meaningful discussion and reflection about diversity in society
Lessons are carefully planned to ensure that No Outsiders complements, rather than replaces, the school’s Catholic teaching, and is always delivered in a way that is consistent with our Gospel values and Catholic identity.
Recently, staff across the school participated in whole-school CPD training led by Andrew Moffatt himself. This training strengthened staff understanding of how No Outsiders supports children in developing respectful attitudes towards difference, while remaining firmly rooted in British values and protected characteristics.
During the training, Andrew Moffatt also personally delivered updated No Outsiders books for each year group, ensuring all classes now have access to the most current resources and texts to support high-quality teaching and learning.
Following this training, Our Lady’s has now updated its No Outsiders books across all year groups. These updated resources:
-
Reflect current themes and contemporary contexts
-
Provide age-appropriate texts and illustrations for each year group
-
Support structured discussions around respect, inclusion, and community
-
Promote understanding of the Protected Characteristics in a child-friendly way
-
Encourage pupils to recognise that everyone belongs and is valued

A Journey in Love
Since September 2020, it has been a statutory requirement for all primary schools in England to teach Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) as part of the curriculum. At Our Lady of Compassion Catholic Primary School, RSHE is taught as part of our wider PSHE curriculum and is an integral part of school life.
We follow the Catholic programme A Journey in Love, alongside No Outsiders, which together support our teaching of relationships, inclusion, and respect. These programmes complement our Religious Education curriculum, To Know You More Clearly, ensuring that learning is rooted in Gospel values and the dignity of the human person.
A Journey in Love is a progressive scheme of work recommended for Catholic schools. It supports children’s learning across Religious Education, PSHE and Science, helping them to develop an understanding of relationships and personal growth in a way that is appropriate to their age and stage of development.

As children move through the school, they gradually develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the wider world. We aim to provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where children feel supported and confident as they grow and learn.
Throughout A Journey in Love, each year group explores an aspect of God’s love, encouraging children to reflect on the wonder and beauty of creation. Learning is carefully structured through a series of age-appropriate activities and reflections, supporting children’s physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development.
We recognise that children are naturally curious and may have questions as part of their learning. Opportunities for discussion are built into lessons and are always handled with sensitivity, care and respect.
