Our Charism

At Our Lady of Compassion Catholic Primary School, our charism is rooted in the example of Mary, Our Lady of Compassion, whose life teaches us to love, serve and care for others with kindness and humility. Our charism is the unique spirit that shapes everything we do, guiding us to live out the Gospel in our words, actions and relationships each day.
Inspired by Christ's command to "love one another as I have loved you", we strive to create a welcoming community where every person is valued, respected and encouraged to flourish. Compassion is at the heart of our school life, influencing the way we learn, pray, celebrate and support one another.
Our pupils are encouraged to recognise the dignity of every person and to respond to the needs of others with empathy, generosity and service. Through prayer, worship, charitable outreach, the work of our Mini Vinnies, our commitment to the Common Good and opportunities to put faith into action, our children learn that living as disciples of Jesus means making a positive difference in the world around them.
Our charism is evident throughout our school community. It can be seen in the warm relationships between pupils, staff and families, in the care shown to those who need support, in the joyful celebration of our faith, and in our commitment to ensuring everyone knows they are loved by God.
As a school family, we seek to follow the example of Our Lady of Compassion by nurturing hearts filled with faith, hope and love, so that every child leaves our school ready to be compassionate citizens who live out Gospel values wherever they go.
Mary – Our Blessed Mother
Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our patron, is at the heart of our school community. She teaches us to say "yes" to God, to trust in His plan and to show kindness and compassion to everyone we meet. As Our Lady of Compassion, we ask Mary to watch over our school family and guide us to follow Jesus each day. Inspired by her example, we strive to live out the words of Ephesians 4:32: "Be kind and compassionate to one another."
Our Lady of Sorrows
Our Lady of Sorrows reminds us that Mary remained faithful to God through times of great suffering and sorrow. Standing beside Jesus at the foot of the Cross, she showed unwavering love, courage and hope. Her example teaches us that God is always with us, even during life's most difficult moments.
As a school, we look to Our Lady of Sorrows as a model of compassion and resilience. We encourage our children to support one another with kindness, empathy and prayer, knowing that through faith, hope and love, we can help bring comfort to those who are hurting. Inspired by Mary's strength, we strive to be a community where everyone feels valued, supported and loved.
Prayer to Our Mother Mary
Our prayer display invites children, staff and visitors to pause, reflect and spend time with Mary in prayer. At the heart of the display is Our Lady of Compassion, reminding us of our school's patron and calling us to live with kindness, compassion and love for others.
Everyone is encouraged to take a Hail Mary prayer card, spend a quiet moment in prayer and, if they wish, take the card home to share with their family. This helps strengthen the partnership between home, school and parish, encouraging prayer beyond the classroom.
The beautiful flowers surrounding the display have been lovingly created by our pupils, celebrating Mary's beauty, gentleness and care. Together, they form a vibrant prayer space where our school community can ask Mary to watch over us, bring our prayers to Jesus and inspire us to live out our mission of being "kind and compassionate to one another" (Ephesians 4:32).
Celebrating May - The Month of Mary
Throughout the month of May, our school family comes together to honour Mary, the Mother of Jesus, in a special way. As nature bursts into life with flowers, blossom and longer days, May reminds us of the beauty of God's creation and provides a fitting time to celebrate Mary's faith, love and devotion to God.
During May, children take part in prayer, reflection and acts of devotion to deepen their relationship with Mary. Pupils gather flowers from our school grounds to create beautiful floral offerings, which they place before our statue of Mary as a sign of love, gratitude and respect. We also crown Mary with a floral wreath, celebrating her as Queen of Heaven and asking her to watch over our school community.
Our Marian celebrations provide opportunities for pupils to pray together, sing hymns and reflect on Mary's example of faith, kindness and compassion. By celebrating May as Mary's month, we encourage our children to follow her example, trusting in God, caring for others and always seeking to grow closer to Jesus through prayer and service.
